Do you ever develop a prejudice against something, either for legitimate or senseless reasons? Years ago, my first experience with Gibraltar was helping set up a drum rack. I don't know of the guy that owned it was an idiot, of if the thing was the piece of junk it seemed to be, but it created a negative attitude towards both Gibraltar and drum racks for me.

Later, I was looking at Sonor gear for the 15 minutes that a local music store sold Sonor, and they tried to sell me Gibraltar hardware. By that time, Sonor's Signature and other lines of hardware were burned permanently into my mind and the cheesy look of the Gibraltar hardware did absolutely nothing for me.

Ever since, they have not been a manufacturer that I have had a single interest in and I still have a pretty snobby attitude towards them.

I was looking at the Trick Drums website the other day and they had a quick-release hi hat clutch that I just had to have. I decided to look around for it at some retailers that would ship for free when I realized it was a Gibraltar. Immediately, the value diminished considerably. My interest waned and my attention briefly went elsewhere.

After getting over myself, I decided that I would get it (Amazon had it at a good price and delivered in 2 days). I went seeking for a Ludwig Atlas 6mm wingnut to replace the Gibraltar one on the new clutch. It will be here Monday! So I have my new awesome clutch, and with the new wingnut no one will know I own a piece of Gibraltar.

Am I the only one with irrational dislikes towards certain products/companies or even drummers?

Keep in mind that Gibraltar also manufactures others’ designs and does it quite well - Dunnett snare throw offs for example.

In all fairness to myself, I did refer to it as an irrational dislike. ;)

DW Drums. I hate them. Hate.

But I love their hardware, go figure.

I almost went DW this time around. Shane recommended the Ludwig Keystone X, and I am certainly glad he did. And the Atlas Pro hardware I'd put up against just about anything in current production (the 600 series Sonor stuff being the only exception I can think of)

I’ve not played a bunch of them, but every DW kit I have played sounded just OK. Nothing to reallyget excited about. The hardware is stellar. I use some myself.

And those LUGS..... gaaaahhhhh!!!! The lugs!!!! Hideous. But the smaller ones on the less-expensive kits are much better looking, IMO.

For me - Orange County stuff.

They've always had that "Assembled" look to to them and seem to focus on whatever's "trendy" at that particular moment - like an equivalent modern day MIJ imitations of Rogers, Ludwig and Slingerland from the 50's and 60's.

Irrational I know but: Pearl.

I know they make some excellent products, but I also look upon them as the company which made mediocrity acceptable, and even desireable.

Go figure.
