Sonor lite shell crack...fixable?

Post by curly » Fri Jan 12, 2018 12:37 pm

I recently acquired a sonor lite shell set with intent on converting it into a small jazz kit - 12,14,18. The 18x18 tom was described as having ~3 inch crack only affecting the inner veneer so I figured it would be simple to cut the shell down to 18x14 for use as a bass drum. Now that I've received the drum, the crack is actually about 7 inches long and is deeper than just the veneer although I cant say if the crack is that deep all the way in. For those of you with restoration experience, is this shell shot or might it do ok with gluing down the crack? I suppose I could cut it down to 18x10, but that's really not what I am hoping for.

I would think you'd be ok gluing that crack. I don't have extensive experience, but there's gotta be someone on here that can give you instructions.

I think cracks are almost always fixable. Personally, if you're having it cut down professionally I'd let them deal with fixing it as well. Good luck.

Ouch !,...These turn into vibrations if you leave them.

I would use a utility knife blade to lift, toothpicks to slide under an hold surface cracks so you can use a syringe needle filled with Elmer`s wood glue that you can thin because it`s water based. Get as much of it as you can in there and not worry about squeeze out. Take the same syringe and glue then stick it into the cracks on the edges as far down as you can. Do the split next to the crack too, that`s the fold of the cracked piece on top that wants to come off.

After gluing, wipe off extra glue with damp cloth then lay down some wax paper or Aluminum foil, then horizontally lay down thin strips of wood, like a school ruler thing, then use a block vertically across the thin strips to bend with the curve and clamp it off with C-clamps or block clamps or any clamps you have. Strips too short will pull it out of round so use some length on the strips they`ll keep it in tolerance.
