I layed my hands on a Sonor snare Extra 1936-51 imperial lugs wooden shell which is in a pretty bad condition, specially the shell.
It isn't round anymore and worse of all, the bearing edges are bent inwards quiet a bid. So i wondered if i could save this shell, because it's old, original, rare and with no extra holes.
How to get those bended bearing edges strechted again, without ruin the shell totally?  As tricky a simpel.
Remove all the paint and the reïnforcement rings.(were already partially loosened)
Put 2 hoops in the middle around the shell (so the shell can't get out of shape) and the 2 original hoops exact on top and bottom and install numerous clamps at the right places and put the whole project in big "bucket" filled with water.
The clamps will keep forcing the edge towards the original position against the hoops, as the shell is soaking in the water and will get flexibel more and more.
After about 20 hours the proces was finished. I could'nt believe my eyes, the glue of the plywood still kept the shell together and didn't loosen.
The shell was almost round again and the bearing edges back in place for 95%.
I took of all clamps and dryed the shell with a cloth and repositioned the clamps.
Now it's drying nearby the stove (save distance) while turning it every half hour, to be sure the shell while dry evenly.
Will be continued.
Henk

And i'm Dutch, living very close to the German border, so maybe you can call me a "spare" german.

Yes Joep, it was me
But after this job is done, there will be a huge clamps garage sale, where you can get,(buy), your clamps back, promised.

In about 3 hours from now, i'll remove the clamps and see what happened during the drying process.
Will be continued.

The brush is attached to the dampener system and probably used as a extra set of "effect wires" on the beater head.

All clamps are off and the result is better as i hoped for.
It didn't became a new shell, but those curling edges are gone for 99%. there are still some dents and deformations, but hey, this drum is between 61 and 76 years old and was in and devistating state.
The 3 x 1 mm. layers of plywood stayed together, so i could glue in the reïnforcement rings again.
The edges aren't flat totally, so i'm thinking of cutting the edges with a few milimetrs in order to get the heads on in a better way later on.
In the mean time i primered the shell, it originally was a ecru color ( or off-white according google translate) that i want to bring back of course.

All parts are numbered

Original little nails made by a blacksmith in the reïnforcement rings.

Again a lot of clamps are needed to hold the reïnforcement ring in place during glueing.

After the glueing.

Henk,
Your dedication in restoring these drums is beyond me...I would not have the time, knowledge, patience, skill or equipment to do half what you do!
Well done my old fruit.
:)
