Hi,

Thanks for looking.

I have a problem with the butt end of my performer snare. One of the screws has threaded and fallen out as you can see in the picture below. I believe the main part that is attached to the snare shell is ok, the problem is one of the screw holes on the small plate at the back which tightens onto it has threaded, and I have lost the screw.

I have posted an ad in the Sonor wanted section a few days ago for a new part but had no replies.

Before I attack this with a full toolbox and a flux-capacitor could any of you guys advise me if you have had this problem too and what are the best options for fixing it? I could easily fit a screw and nut but wouldn't look that great. Are there any other options? Do you know of anyone who sells this part?

Thanks in advance for your help. T

If it comes to it, you could retap the hole with the next size bigger and get 2 bigger screws to match....

Hardly anyone would ever notice if both are the same...

Thanks man, thats an idea. Think I might look into that. My only concern would be threading it again and creating an even bigger problem later on. But it's certainly a good option.

Really good option and Latz certainly knows his stuff! ;)

Another option is getting a new bolt the correct size and a nylon lock nut for it. Bit fiddly when it comes to remove your snare wires etc when changing the reso head but lets be honest how often will you do that??

I'm not quite sure what you mean by "threaded." Does that mean the screw is stripped of its threads or the hole is?

In either case, if replacement parts are not available, you should find a tap and die shop and/or professional with tap and die tools that can help. Bring everything you do have to them, and they can help.

Latz certainly knows his stuff Ron, no doubt.

I did think about the lock nut idea but thought I might get some brain storming done here basically to see what the experts can come up with. I think the lock nut will be my last resort. Thanks mate.

Sorry Jason, I will explain a bit more. I believe the screw has been ok but the hole on the backing/tightening plate has stripped. It will probably have been caused by me over tightenening the screw. I have lost the screw but but shouldn't be difficult to find something close to the size if not the same. The tap and die idea is a possibility but might be a bit pricey, will get a quote and see. Thanks for your advice.

You can easily do the tapping yourself and it's not expensive. I've done it numerous times on various stripped hardware parts including the Designer strainer on my Sig/Symph snare. Find what size the original holes on the plate and bracket are and move up one size. You can go either metric or regular. With a vice to clamp the parts, use a drill to slightly enlarge the 2 holes on the plate and the 2 holes on the bracket. Use the appropriate size tap wrench to cut new threads for the new bolts and you're set. Take your time and be precise. If you aren't comfortable doing it, take it to a metal shop. They won't charge much since it's a pretty simple process.

Since I'm all glowing with compliments, here's another idea...

Weld the correct size nut on the back of the plate. On the butt plate, the backing plate is the one with the threads, yes? There is enough clearance between the shell and the butt plate to weld a nut on there. What is it, 6mm maybe. If you are concerned about the discoloration from welding, you can always have it re-chromed.

And of course, do both holes so they match and the second won't strip out.

Remember to put the screw through the good hole and run the nut up against the plate before welding to ensure the threads line up..

If you were in the US, I'd tell you to send it to me to fix....

So heres the deal. I really need to get this snare back on the road asap. So the short term fix will be to fit a couple of lock nuts and screws for both holes without re-tapping or modifying. That'll get me back to two snares short-term (I hate going to gigs with one snare). When I get a bit more time I'll try getting the hole re-tapped and get the snare back to it's authentic best.

Thanks for all your input guys, really appreciate it. :D

Take the plate off of the butt plate and measure it. Width, Height, Length.. distance from outer edges to center of screw holes. Size of screws..

I'll make you a new plate that the screws go into. It's not that difficult. I can't chrome it, but you'll never see it behind the butt plate....

Don't know why I didn't think of this before...
