A VISIT TO GERMANY AND SONOR - page 7

The newly made shells, after resting are then trimmed, raw edge sanded and taken to the edge router.

Putting a 45 degree edge on an S-Classix floor tom shell. Toms and snares get a sharp 45,
for bass drums, the router is dropped very slightly giving them a "softer" edge.

Sanding the exterior with a huge belt sander. Don't try this at home...

NEXT - to one of the paint booths. This SQ2 shell will get a matte interior and exterior.

Matte finish shells get 2 coats of lacquer. Gloss get FIVE with a hand sanding between each.

Meanwhile... A Delite shell gets a duco finish applied...

The worker uses a red laser as his guide...

This room is sealed and given a positive presure to eliminate the possibility of dust contaminating the finish.

Karl explains the method to check whether a gloss finish is right:

If the reflection of the flourescent light runs across the shell in an absolutely straight line, the finish is perfect. If there is a waver of any kind, it will be sanded further. This shell still has some imperfections that will be worked over before the next assembly station -

Of course, some SQ2 and S-Classix shells have a wrap applied. Here is the machine used to acomplish this. Glue is evenly applied to the wrap's backing before being pressed onto the shells using rollers for consistent presure and adhesion.

Next - the shells are drilled using a computer-controlled drilling machineā€¦

This is a marching bass drum that's being drilled...

The drilled shells then go to the final assembly area.

Packaging and labeling

Next, everything ends up in the warehouse for distribution around the world.

Sonor itself is the distributor for Germany and Austria.

At the far end of the warehouse is the area where endorser and clinic kits are stored.

In this area is also where repair parts orders are processed.
Unfortunately the pictures I took were so blurry as to be unusable.

There is still a limited stock of Link Era parts on hand.
