Sonor Rosewood Bebop Kit

Early 1970's (mostly) Sonor Rosewood kit.

Gorgeous quartered Brazilian rosewood veneer over 6-ply beech shells. Circa 1974 - except for the mounted tom which is a late 1980's Performer tom recovered in rosewood. The kit was pieced together over the past year or so, thus the veneer doesn't match well but I don't care. They sound great!
The I use most is a
90's Sonor Designer Series Ferromanganese Steel Piccolo.

This shell set is a converted 16x18 floor tom, a 14x14 floor tom and a 9x10 mounted tom.

Hardware consists of Sonor Force 3000 double tom stand bases with Tama boom arms (they fit perfectly, even the memory locks!), Sonor Force 3000 snare stand, an older DW Turbo HiHat with baseplate removed and Delta hinge retrofitted, First generation DW Delta Turbo bass pedal, and a Tama HT90 throne.

Cymbals - (left to right) 50's Zildjian 13" hihats, 60's 18" A Zildjian crash, 50's (?) 20" A Zildjian Ride, 60's A. Zildjian 16" medium thin crash, 10" Sabian AAFusion hihats.

Toca Bongos and other assorted percussion toys. I'm still looking into a Roland SPD-6 and cheapo sampler to trigger stupid noises - a la Spike Jones.

Note how well the Tama arms fit into the Sonor stand. I've had them for years, so it was nice not to have to lay out the extra $$ and WAIT for the Sonor variety. The auxilliary hihat contraption is a genuinely overbuilt Sonor Z3044 X-Hat and 5000 series X-hat holder.

The veneer on the 10 has a burl pattern, but from 10 feet away you really can't tell it doesn't match the rest.

Take a look below at how the hoops were fitted. MOST drum makers ( I assume) mount their lugs the same whether or not the drum is a floor tom or a bass. Not Sonor. Oh noooo! They mount the lugs closer to the edge on toms than on bass drums rendering factory bass drum hardware unuseable for a retrofit. They also put 9 lugs on the 18" floor tom shell as opposed to the 8 everyone else does. I used stainless Ayotte-style wood hoop claws. These had to be drilled to accept the stock Sonor rods. It's an inelegant solution, but it works. It also helps to have an old Sonor long drumkey at hand ti tune this guy.

I also use a BabyKick hoop mount riser. This turned out to be uneccessary, but I've used it anyway since the spur mounts are in the wrong location for optimal use . It's hard to tell from the angle, but the kick actually sits up off the floor about 3".
